In the video work Episodes, I have worked collaboratively with my close friend Alastair who, like me, experiences multiple mental health conditions. I have photographed Alastair’s home for many years and my first work on him was a book including a series of colour documentary photographs of his home and the glorious chaos in which he lives that is frequently punctured with reminders of his obsessive-compulsive nature. Episodes was made in year 1 of the MFA Photography course when I decided that the most powerful way to talk about attitudes towards mental health would be to persuade Alastair, who had previously refused to be photographed, to talk about his life on film. We staged the set to resemble a Beckett play. Alastair sitting on a chair, on a stage, filmed in black and white talking about the multiple oscillating episodes in his life and how people respond to him.
